THE PEST POSSE - Pest Control
Rats and Mice belong to the group known as Rodents (from the Latin word rodere, “to gnaw”), and as the name suggests, their behaviour brings multiple problems to businesses and family homes. Amongst the most common:
*Structural problems requiring expensive repairs;
Constant gnawing of a wide range of materials is often the cause of serious structural damage. Typically, rodents gnaw at door frames, skirting boards, upholstery, food containers, books, equipment and machinery. Wires and cables are an extremely common item for rodents to gnaw at, often resulting in short-circuiting of systems and furthermore, very costly fires.
*Eating and contaminating stored foods;
Rodents move freely in and around stored foods rendering them inedible due to contamination either from directly eating them or leaving droppings, urine and hairs on the surfaces.
*Transmitting diseases amongst humans.
A multitude of diseases can be transmitted by rodents through a variety of means, including direct contamination of food and eating utensils and/or bacteria entering the system through broken skin, and indirect contamination transmitted via bloodsucking parasites from rodent to human, through physical touch of pets exposed to surface diseases, or through eating a contaminated animal (for example, a worm infested rodent being eaten by an animal, and that animal being eaten by a human).
Capable of breeding extensively, often within two months of being born, rat and mice infestations can quickly build to mass proportions resulting in the negative effects outlined above and requiring a management solution that may require a combination of methods, depending on the circumstances.
Rats are very much creatures of habit, entering homes and workplaces in Melbourne looking for food, taking up residence during colder months or building nests to live in all year round. They will often be wary of new objects introduced into their environment such as traps or bait, therefore taking some time to respond to pest management.
Mice, on the other hand, are much more curious and tend to explore their environment far more than rats. As mice are particularly good climbers, jumpers and swimmers, different forms of capture may be used which enables a much easier process than that of capturing rats.
The Pest Posse offers safe control options that will eliminate your problem and prevent future infestations, including detection and identification of rodents, rodent proofing advice, capture using proven effective products and methods such as baiting and safe chemical control.
