THE PEST POSSE - Pest Control
Whilst there are thousands of cockroach species in the world, only a tiny handful of these scavengers have managed to cohabit with humans, lending themselves to disease transmission, contamination, smell, allergic reactions, fear and all-round annoyance!
In Melbourne, cockroaches can be found all year round however the combination of relatively dry winters followed by humid summers is the ideal breeding condition for these extremely annoying pests who thrive on temperature, humidity and moisture. Cockroach’s needs are simple: food, warmth, shelter and preferred darkness. They will eat virtually anything, including all human and animal food or beverages, dead animals, plants, wood, grease, cardboard, glue, leather, hair and much, much more.
Cockroaches are often found indoors as they prefer tight, sheltered cracks and crevices and will generally only venture out after nightfall or in complete darkness. If active cockroaches are observed during daylight, this is often a good indication that there is an overpopulation hiding in the area.
Commonly found in offices, hospitals, restaurants, storerooms and so on, and particularly as they are attracted to moist areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, cockroaches are responsible for much transmission of human diseases. This is due to the fact they are often found dwelling in environments (such as sewers and drainpipes) that harbour organisms resulting in harmful diseases to humans. As the pest moves in and around food and/or food handling areas, they leave traces of the diseased organisms (including salmonella) via droppings, shed skins, empty egg cases (of which can be dropped or glued prior to hatching), vomit marks and dead cockroaches.
There are many ways to prevent cockroaches from invading your home or business, prior to having an outbreak and requiring the assistance of a qualified pest control technician. However, the importance of scrupulous housekeeping in any cockroach control program, cannot be emphasised enough!
· Restrict food and food consumption to one area of the house or business, and clean up immediately after consumption. Do not leave dirty dishes and benches unwashed overnight.
· Ensure window and door frames are fit tightly to prohibit access from outside.
· Get rid of piles of paper and unwanted boxes where they can hide.
· Clean kitchen appliances and storage areas thoroughly and regularly.
· Inspect for leaking taps or pipes, and fix if identified.
· Ensure pet food containers are emptied at night, or sealed tight in a plastic bag.
· Vacuum regularly.
· Some effective commercial products are available from leading supermarkets and warehouses for eradication and control.
Failing these measures, professional treatment from The Pest Posse will ensure you receive a thorough inspection to identify the type of cockroach and infestation size, and a treatment plan implemented using tried and tested techniques for effective eradication and control of cockroaches with a long-term solution.
